Relationship Yoga

The more I live my life tuning to dharma and seeing it becoming more dharmic, certain words come through really strongly, like the words balance and patience. I see myself going through life in which phenomena appear and some captivate me immensely. And my awareness goes into a thought relationship with that particular phenomena. At that moment, I lose some balance. I lose the spacious ground in which that phenomena exists. And then sometimes I keep letting go of thoughts, letting go of thoughts, over and over, until there is just awareness. Resting in that awareness, you lose the world. I’ve mentioned in previous posts about fire, more specifically which fires purify and which fires burn. At different moments one fire that would burn at one moment later will purify. Mainly dependent on how ego involved or how invested you are in a particular phenomena as it arises.

I experience my life as a dance of balancing, of cultivating the qualities of spaciousness or equanimity, of peace, of happiness, but I notice that there were certain stages in my development, and they are still going on, where I haven’t yet fully re-entered into the passions of life, because I’m afraid of them. Because I’m afraid they will captivate my consciousness and take me away from my balanced mind. And I realize you shouldn’t be afraid of anything, but I am afraid. What I see myself doing is getting closer and closer to the edge of my fear. Of coming back into some passionate joy about something in the world, something I would have been afraid to do for fear of losing my quiet spaciousness. And realizing that now my quiet spaciousness is still present. That it’s still empty, clear and quiet.

I’m in the fortunate position where I get to practice my balance several times a day when I meet with my clients face-to-face. Many of my client’s are prepared for the session, they spend a great deal of time thinking what they will say, and they get it down to the kernel of the essence of the drama, the pain, the confusion. And they hand me the kernel, with all of its juice. And its our kernel, it’s our juice, it’s our stuff. And its my stuff as well as their stuff. I mean it’s just us kids here.

I watch because my job in that position, and my job in life, but that position demands it, is that I keep that balance perfectly. At that moment, if I don’t open my heart to the fullness of what that individual’s pain or essence problem is, what they experience, is that I’m not hearing them. That I don’t understand, that they are alone inside their predicament, because I kept separate, I didn’t allow my empathy, the passions that my empathy would engage, I didn’t allow it to occur. So I open myself and sometimes my heart breaks, because a person’s predicament is a heart breaker. But then the other part of me is constantly coming back into “sky.” Into that just awareness, just that presence that looks at the emotional states, works with them, doesn’t push them doesn’t pull them, doesn’t grab them. And that part of me becomes a mirror for the other person, for them to see the way in which they are caught.

In other words, the two bits of information that my presence there is offering, is one the empathy, we are all in this together. And the other is, but we don’t need to be caught, this is two bits of information. I realize now more and more, that what we offer each other as human beings, we offer each other an environment. That exercise is keeping me in the environment of that balance, so that I’m an environment where if that other person wants to come out and play from the pain and suffering… Here I am. And if they are in the pain and suffering… Here I am. But there is nothing in me that’s keeping them stuck in the pain and suffering and there’s nothing in me demanding they come out.

Alan Watts: The Story of the Chinese Farmer

In a talk about Taoism called Swimming Headless, Alan Watts shared with his audience the parable of the Chinese farmer which beautifully expresses the Yin-Yang of Fortune and Misfortune.

The whole process of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity, and it’s really impossible to tell whether anything that happens in it is good or bad — because you never know what will be the consequence of the misfortune; or, you never know what will be the consequences of good fortune.
— Alan Watts

Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away. That evening, all of his neighbors came around to commiserate. They said, “We are so sorry to hear your horse has run away. This is most unfortunate.” The farmer said, “Maybe.”

The next day the horse came back bringing seven wild horses with it, and in the evening everybody came back and said, “Oh, isn’t that lucky. What a great turn of events. You now have eight horses!” The farmer again said, “Maybe.”

The following day his son tried to break one of the horses, and while riding it, he was thrown and broke his leg. The neighbors then said, “Oh dear, that’s too bad,” and the farmer responded, “Maybe.”

The next day the conscription officers came around to conscript people into the army, and they rejected his son because he had a broken leg. Again all the neighbors came around and said, “Isn’t that great!” Again, he said, “Maybe.”

The farmer steadfastly refrained from thinking of things in terms of gain or loss, advantage or disadvantage, because one never knows… In fact we never really know whether an event is fortune or misfortune, we only know our ever-changing reactions to ever-changing events.

Wes Pinkston's Must Read Book List

One of the most common questions I get is, "What books do you recommend?"

Well, here you go!

WesPinkston.jpg

1. The Book

On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are

by Alan Watts

In The Book, Alan Watts provides us with a much-needed answer to the problem of personal identity, distilling and adapting the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta.

At the root of human conflict is our fundamental misunderstanding of who we are. The illusion that we are isolated beings, unconnected to the rest of the universe, has led us to view the “outside” world with hostility, and has fueled our misuse of technology and our violent and hostile subjugation of the natural world. To help us understand that the self is in fact the root and ground of the universe, Watts has crafted a revelatory primer on what it means to be human—and a mind-opening manual of initiation into the central mystery of existence.

WesPinkstonRobertAntonWilson.jpg

2. Prometheus Rising

by Robert Anton Wilson

Prometheus Rising describes the landscape of human evolution and offers the reader an opportunity to become a conscious participant. In an astoundingly useful road map infused with humor and startling insight, Robert Anton Wilson presents the Eight Circuits of the Brain model as an essential guide for the effort to break free of imprinted and programmed behavior, Bob writes, "We are all giants, raised by pygmies, who have learned to walk with a perpetual mental crouch. Unleashing our full stature–our total brain power–is what this book is all about.”

WesPinkstonRamDass.jpg

3. How Can I Help?

by Ram Dass

Not a day goes by without our being called upon to help one another--at home, at work, on the street, on the phone. . . . We do what we can. Yet so much comes up to complicate this natural response: "Will I have what it takes?" "How much is enough?" "How can I deal with suffering?" "And what really helps, anyway?"

In this practical helper's companion, the authors explore a path through these confusions, and provide support and inspiration fo us in our efforts as members of the helping professions, as volunteers, as community activists, or simply as friends and family trying to meet each other's needs. Here too are deeply moving personal accounts: A housewife brings zoo animals to lift the spirits of nursing home residents; a nun tends the wounded on the first night of the Nicaraguan revolution; a police officer talks a desperate father out of leaping from a roof with his child; a nurse allows an infant to spend its last moments of life in her arms rather than on a hospital machine. From many such stories and the authors' reflections, we can find strength, clarity, and wisdom for those times when we are called on to care for one another. How Can I Help? reminds us just how much we have to give and how doing so can lead to some of the most joyous moments of our lives.

WesPinkstonRobertAntonWilsonQuantumPsychology.jpg

4. Quantum Psychology

by Robert Anton Wilson

Quantum Psychology offers a coherent and humorous description of how our thoughts, values and behaviors have been colored by our use of language and our prevailing view of the universe. While Quantum Mechanics, relativity, non-Euclidean geometries, non-Aristotelian logic and General Semantics have revolutionized our view of the world, the habits of daily human thought still sit deeply rooted in the thought patterns and linguistic conventions of the middle ages. Through an introduction to E-Prime (English without use of the verb “to be”), the Eight Circuits of the Brain Model, and the labyrinth of Quantum Mechanic’s various views of reality, Quantum Psychology can help your brain improve your perception of yourself and the world.

WesPinkstonJidduKrishnamurti.jpg

5. Freedom from the Known

Krishnamurti shows how people can free themselves radically and immediately from the tyranny of the expected, no matter what their age-opening the door to transforming society and their relationships.

WesPinkstonThichNhatHanh.jpg

6. The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching

Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, and Liberation

by Thich Nhat Hanh

In The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching, now revised with added material and new insights, Nhat Hanh introduces us to the core teachings of Buddhism and shows us that the Buddha’s teachings are accessible and applicable to our daily lives.

Covering such significant teachings as the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Three Doors of Liberation, the Three Dharma Seals, and the Seven Factors of Awakening, The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching is a radiant beacon on Buddhist thought for the initiated and uninitiated alike.

WesPinkstonZenMasterDogenShobogenzo.jpg

7. Realizing Genjokoan: The Key to Dogen's Shobogenzo

by Shohaku Okumura

Dogen, the thirteenth-century Zen master who founded the Japanese Soto school of Zen, is renowned as one the world's most remarkable religious geniuses. His works are both richly poetic and deeply insightful and philosophical, pointing to the endless depths of Zen exploration. And almost precisely because of these facts, Dogen is often difficult for readers to understand and fully appreciate.

Realizing Genjokoan is a comprehensive introduction to the teachings and approach of this great thinker, taking us on a thorough guided tour of the most important essay-Genjokoan-in Dogen's seminal work, the Shobogenzo. Indeed, the Genjokoan is regarded as the pinnacle of Dogen's writings, encompassing and encapsulating the essence of all the rest of his work.

Our tour guide for this journey is Shohaku Okumura, a prominent teacher in his own right, who has dedicated his life to translating and teaching Dogen.

WesPinkstonZenMindBeginnersMind.png

8. Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind

by Shunryu Suzuki

"In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few."

So begins this most beloved of all American Zen books.  Seldom has such a small handful of words provided a teaching as rich as has this famous opening line.  In a single stroke, the simple sentence cuts through the pervasive tendency students have of getting so close to Zen as to completely miss what it's all about.  An instant teaching on the first page.  And that's just the beginning.

In the forty years since its original publication, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind has become one of the great modern spiritual classics, much beloved, much reread, and much recommended as the best first book to read on Zen. Suzuki Roshi presents the basics—from the details of posture and breathing in zazen to the perception of nonduality—in a way that is not only remarkably clear, but that also resonates with the joy of insight from the first to the last page.

WesPinkstonErichNeumann.jpg

9. The Origins and History of Consciousness

by Erich Neumann

The Origins and History of Consciousness draws on a full range of world mythology to show how individual consciousness undergoes the same archetypal stages of development as human consciousness as a whole. Erich Neumann was one of C. G. Jung's most creative students and a renowned practitioner of analytical psychology in his own right. In this influential book, Neumann shows how the stages begin and end with the symbol of the Uroboros, the tail-eating serpent. The intermediate stages are projected in the universal myths of the World Creation, Great Mother, Separation of the World Parents, Birth of the Hero, Slaying of the Dragon, Rescue of the Captive, and Transformation and Deification of the Hero. Throughout the sequence, the Hero is the evolving ego consciousness.

WesPinkstonJosephCampbell.jpg

10. The Hero with a Thousand Faces

by Joseph Campbell

Since its release in 1949, The Hero with a Thousand Faces has influenced millions of readers by combining the insights of modern psychology with Joseph Campbell’s revolutionary understanding of comparative mythology. In these pages, Campbell outlines the Hero’s Journey, a universal motif of adventure and transformation that runs through virtually all of the world’s mythic traditions. He also explores the Cosmogonic Cycle, the mythic pattern of world creation and destruction.

Meditation

If we continue to observe our mind over some time, we notice that it’s not always distracted and busy. For all of us, there are times when our minds become concentrated, sharp and clear. Perhaps we are doing a cross-word puzzle, playing a video game, reading a mystery story, cleaning the house or cooking. For some, it’s the simple tasks that engage us in ways that allow our mind to be composed and focused; for others, it’s complex problem solving.

Many times, however, the needs of others are what bring us to a state of sharp concentration. Whether it’s because we feel very secure with those we’re with or because we are functioning under conditions of extreme crisis, we find that in this state of intense concentration helpful insights arise on their own, as a function of our one-pointedness. In these experiences we meet a resource of remarkable potential. While we may be frustrated in not having access to it all the time, these experiences lead us to inquire whether there might be something we could do more regularly and formally to quiet the mind, strengthen its concentration, make available the deeper insights that often result, and bring them into closer attunement with the empathy and compassion of our heart. How immeasurably this might enhance our ability to help others.

Traditionally, one such way to begin this investigation is through meditation, systematically observing the mind itself and becoming more familiar with the ways in which we are denied the experience of full concentration. When we do this, with even a simple exercise like focusing our attention on our breath or on a candle flame, we begin to see that there is a continuous stream of thoughts going on all the time. Meditation may be frustrating if we think we can stop this process right away. We can’t. But by penetrating and observing it, we can free ourselves from being carried away by our thoughts.

Our thoughts are always happening. Much like leaves floating down a stream or clouds crossing the sky, they just keep coming. They arise in the form of sensations, feelings, memories, anticipations, and speculations. And they are all constantly calling for attention: Think of me.” “Notice me.” “Attend to me.” As each thought passes, either we attend to it or we don’t. While we can’t stop the thoughts themselves, we can stop our awareness from being snared by each one. If you are standing by a river and a leaf floats by, you have your choice of following the leaf with your eye or keeping your attention fixed in front of you. The leaf floats out of your line of vision. Another leaf enters… and floats by.

But as we stand on the bank of the river and the leaves float by, there is no confusion as to whether or not we are the leaves. Similarly, it turns out that there is a place in our minds from which we can watch our own mental images go by. We aren’t our thoughts any more than we are the leaves.

If we imagine that our mind is like the blue sky, and that across it pass thoughts as clouds, we can get a feel for that part of it which is other than our thoughts. The sky is always present; it contains the clouds and yet is not contained by them. So with our awareness. It is present and encompasses all our thoughts, feelings, and sensations; yet it is not the same as them. To recognize and acknowledge this awareness, with its spacious, peaceful quality, is to find a very useful resource within. We see that we need not identify with each thought just because it happens to occur. We can remain quiet and choose which thought we wish to attend to. And we can remain aware behind all these thoughts, in a state that offers an entirely new level of openness and insight.

Your Feelings Are Never Wrong

The mystic is the one who feels that everything that happens is in some way harmonious, is in some way right, is in some way an integral part of the universe. Now when we translate that into the moral sphere, the sphere of human conduct, the equivalent is this…

There are no wrong feelings.

There may be wrong actions, in the sense of actions contrary to the rules of human communication. But the way you feel towards other people, loving, hating, etc., there aren’t any wrong feelings. So to try and force one’s feelings to be other than what they are is absurd, and further more, dishonest. The idea that there are no wrong feelings is an immensely threatening idea to people who are afraid to feel in any case. This is one of the peculiar problems of our culture. That we are terrified of our feelings, because they take off on their own. And we think if we give them any scope, and if we don’t immediately beat them down, they will lead us into all kinds of chaotic and destructive action. It’s so funny, that we, in our Western culture today say that kind of thing, we who do more chaotic and reckless kind of action than anybody ever did.

But if, for a change, we would allow our feelings, and look upon their comings and goings as something as beautiful and as natural and necessary as changes in the weather, the going of night and day, and of the four seasons, we would be at peace with ourselves. Because what is problematic for western man is not so much his struggles with other people, and their needs and their problems, as his struggles with his own feelings. With what he will allow himself to feel and what he won’t allow himself to feel. He is ashamed to feel really profoundly sad, so much so that he could cry. It is not manly to cry. He is ashamed to loathe somebody, because you are not supposed to hate people. He’s ashamed to be so overcome with the beauty of something, whether it be a natural landscape or a member of the opposite sex, that he goes out of his mind with this beauty. Because all that kind of thing is not being in control, not kind of having your hand on the wheel. But it is because we don’t go with that, that we are not in control.

That we try to pretend that our inner life is different. I think this is the most releasing thing that anybody can possibly understand. That your inner feeling is never wrong. That’s to say, what you feel, it is never wrong that you feel that way. It may not be a right guide to what you should do. In other words, if you feel that you hate someone intensely, it isn’t necessarily the right way of dealing with that feeling to go out and harm them. But it is right that you should have the feeling of hating, or of being sad, or frightened, terrified, whatever it is.

When a person comes to himself, he comes to be one with his own feeling. And that is the only way of being in a position to control it. It is in exactly this way that the sailor always keeps the wind in his sails. Whether he wants to sail with the wind or whether he wants to sail against the wind, he always uses the wind, he never denies the wind. Well it’s in exactly that same sense that a person has to keep going with his own feeling. Whether he wants to act as the feeling obviously suggests, or act in a different way, he has to keep the feeling with him, because that’s his own essential self. But when he attempts simply to sail against the wind, he’s lost himself. He’s become just a kind of empty mask, which hasn’t got any real life behind it, all it’s protestations of love and good-will are hollow.

What the mystic primarily feels is the divinity, the glory, of whatever it is. And when we apply that to the moral sphere, what IS, is what one feels genuinely. And this must always be admitted, always allowed. It doesn’t mean that we always are therefore compelled to act upon the basis of what we feel. That is to say, to kill the person we hate. Hatred does not necessarily lead to violence, it is unacknowledged hatred that leads to violence. Honest hatred can be expressed in much simpler ways. But the expression, the recognition, the acceptance of what is honestly felt, is the moral equivalent of the vision that whatever exists is a manifestation of the divine.

Intuition

One of the most common questions I’m asked is “what is intuition and how does it work?”

This is one of the most difficult and controversial questions for many reasons that I will get into…

It appears to me that intuition is a feeling into things. In a way “it” guides us to answers and seems to leave no trail. In other words, we arrive at an answer without a formal explanation. You have it, but you haven’t the argument for it. Its power seems to reside in its truthfulness more than anything else.

The power of intuition lies in its ability to express truth

We first derive a notion of the essence of intuition in the obscure oriental doctrines of taoism which seems to point towards a direct experience of the nature of things, also known as intuition in the occidental mind.

Being in the Tao, or the flow of nature, seems to be the ability to sense the constraints and opportunities in the moment and act through it.

Often, when the topic of Intuition is brought up it’s main descriptions are commonly expressed as

1) Vague

2) Feminine

3) Unreliable

Yet, a closer look at our lives on a daily basis will illustrate quite the opposite.

We use words like “hunch” which also imply a sort of feeling into things and making a decision, although many of us “believe” we are acting logically, our actions, if studied carefully, show quite the contrary in many situations.

What is the threshold of having enough data to make a decision? There is always a moment when you wrap it up and move forward, there is no rule book for needing this amount of info before making a decision, it’s always a hunch or intuitively arrived at.

Even though there is this bias towards rationalism which has permeated through our culture for the last couple hundred years our experience with reality shows a different experience.

In fact, in the felt domain of immediate experience called “living,” intuition is how most of us, even the most self defined as “non-intuitional” are operating. Intuition is a kind of field processing of both the foreground and the background of experience, it’s a gestalt understanding that is subliminal and that leads the whole organism through an invisible set of doors, towards the maximizing of some sort of a goal.

When we approach the phenomena of intuition with rationalistic and reductionary tools the result is similar to a sieve through water, always exceeding one’s grasp. The correct approach to this shy and delicate magic known as intuition is to understand it with the tools of night logic, known as dream.

Dreams do not follow the forward and linear movement that our nervous system seems to create during the day. In the attempt to understand dream (feminine night logic) with the tools of the rationalistic and masculine tools is to miss the point and remain unsatisfied with the end result. You must change your approach, and meet the magic of intuition where it wants rather than attempting to fit it into a nice and neatly organized rational and reductionistic box. With this approach, we flatten out the most exciting and mysterious aspects of life, and we wonder where all the magic in our life has gone, we’ve neglected it with our logical and rational tools, but not too worry, her presence is always one thought away and she is quite patient…

Sacrifice

Delaying gratification in today's world seems like a herculean task. At several points throughout the day you are faced with micro decisions of impulsivity or discipline. One of the first questions to ask yourself is Why should I consider delaying gratification?

This is a great question, and it deserves some serious attention since your future is riding on it.

Well it's quite simple on the surface, If you want to make things better in the future you make sacrifices today. You already know this, for instance if you want to become healthier it would be wise to choose a fruit or vegetable for lunch rather than fast food junk. The healthier food choice is for your future self that does not exist now, but will come into manifestation if the proper sacrifice is made consistently.

Since we became self conscious we made a startling discovery... the FUTURE. The future is an incredible place filled with infinite possibilities of what you could become. Like any phenomena, there is always another side, the discovery of the future also holds the realization of your boundaries, limits and inescapable mortality.

One question is... Are you willing to sacrifice your current self for your future self? Assuming you have set your ideals up properly and are aiming at a higher state than you currently reside, the answer is YES, yes you are willing, for that is the only way to make our difficult existence worthwhile. But here is one of the main reasons why you won't make the sacrifice, you don't have the ability to visualize a future ideal enough to get you to act and move toward it. You would rather take an actual and immediate treat at this very moment than two or more imaginary treats in the future.

Is sacrifice easy? No, it's one of the hardest things to do, which is why so few do it. Few are able to imagine a better future, put the steps together and actualize them day to day choice by choice, always making the choice for the future self rather than the immediate gratification of the current self today.

This is where discipline comes in, in fact discipline is wanting to do something now, but instead you forestall the immediate gratification and instead focus your resources on something you feel will bear fruit in the medium to long range future. Discipline is the ability to make consistent sacrifices day in and day out. By making today a little less impulsive you increase the likelihood of making tomorrow more secure and productive. This can be a choice you make for yourself or for your children. To use an example from my adolescence, most middle school kids have a difficult time forecasting and making a plan for the future. Instead, children are mainly focused on immediate gratification and led by impulsivity. My parents made a sacrifice for me and my future, they decided to remove me from a school district that was in the decline and send me to a private school that would set me up for a brighter future. To this day I thank them and I'm incredibly grateful, but I remember at the time I did not have the ability to see the future potential of what the change offered, instead I was focused on my current friends and the removal of the structure I had set up.

Sacrifice for the sake of sacrificing won't stick, it needs to be aimed at a goal or an ideal. This is where the imagination and inner vision is extremely important, WHAT IS IT YOU WANT EXACTLY? To begin with it needs to be obtainable. Not too easy where little to no effort is needed but also not to extreme where the chance of failure is too high. Look at your daily routine, how much television you watch, what you eat and drink throughout the day consistently, where should you start? You are aware of 5, 10, 15, 20 things that you are doing each day that you shouldn't be. Pick one, the sacrifice will pay off, whether it's financial, nutritional, relationship based.

If you have any questions or would like to work one-on-one feel free to email me at wespinkston@gmail.com, have a wonderful week everyone.

Mastering Your Day

It’s another Monday morning… Exciting huh? How did you spend your weekend? What choices did you make? Are you an individual that enjoys the weekends but merely survives the week days?

A model that may be of use to you is simply viewing your life in single day chunks. Today you will be presented with several opportunities and choices, whether you are conscious of them or not. The choices you make will increase the chances that the same choice will be made tomorrow. If that same choice is made tomorrow then we most likely have a habit that is forming and burying into our daily program like a parasite. SO be veryyyyy careful and conscious about what you are doing, EVERY SECOND of EVERY Day for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE…

Some of my client’s in the beginning mention that being aware of every thought throughout the day is hard work, my response… ABSOLUTELY.

Some of the choices you will be presented with today are your food choices, your reactions in relation to external stimulation, what you do with your free time, the activities you indulge in before bed, the amount of water you drink, coffee you consume, the way you lift up or knock down the one’s around you based on your words and many others…

Do you go to work the same direction every day? Say the same thing to your spouse, eat the same breakfast, listen to the same music on the way to the office, enter the office the same way and say hi to the same people with the same statement. Is the only thing different about this day your outfit, making a selection of a few color combinations that are beginning to be a nuisance. Are you sitting at your desk at this moment thinking there has to be more… you don’t know how you know there is more but you KNOW, but have no idea how to get THERE.

Well you are right, there is more, more than you could even wrap your mind around, but do you have the courage and commitment to see if through. Do you think it’d be easy work to transform your life? This path will take ALL OF YOU at ALL TIMES. This has nothing to do with reading a self-help book for 10-minutes a week and occasionally ordering a salad in between the beers you are consuming.

I’m unable to go into all the details in one post, without the context of your personal situation I can only speak vaguely and leave it up to you to fill in the details.

I’d like to give you an assignment… I’d like you to write down on a word doc or on a piece of paper what you want out of this incredible opportunity and life you’ve been handed, do it now, write down exactly what you want.

Feel free to send it to me if you’d like, send it here: WesPinkston@gmail.com

Most of you won’t do that assignment but oh well, next thing I’d like you to do is to write down all your choices you make today. Consider this self-observation, rather than sleep walking through your day be aware of what you are doing and the choices you are making. Breaking the attachment with the act of doing and observing the do’er and the doing from an awareness outside both. Since most of us are highly habitual you will notice how difficult doing anything novel and different is. To do something new, to break a habitual daily pattern is your will, and unless it is used often like a muscle it will atrophy and be useless over time.

By using your power of observation and will you can master your day. This is all you need to do, master your 24 hours, every decision, ever thought, every action. If you can master your day, and do this day-in and day-out consistently your life will begin to change. You can never go back though to the lazy days though, the soft routine days of sleep walking. If you are to begin, this needs to maintained forever, full focus and concentration. This is why 987 out of 1,000 won’t continue down this path. It’s not a secret path, it’s not occult or esoteric, it’s right here in front of you, in plain day-light. This is the answer to the scratch within you that you can never seem to itch.

More Money? Nope, that won’t scratch it. A Beautiful Girlfriend/Boyfriend? Nope, that won’t scratch it. A New Car? House? Traveling? A Book? Nope, Nope, Nope, Nope.

It’s YOU. Stop delaying your work.

For any change to occur you need to stay with it forever, there is no stopping, there is no destination. Increasing your intelligence is never complete, maintaining your body is never complete, you need to do it every day, FOREVER.

This is THE SECRET

Being 100% responsible for every choice and action you take for the rest of your life. It makes no difference which mind liberation and self transformation school you check in to from the oriental to the occidental, the secret is hard word every day and every second.

Most of us are pulled around by our socially created expectations and animalistic desires all day. We choose food based on pleasure rather than consuming nutritious food because our stomach let’s us know it’s time. We are on our phones aimlessly consuming content without any courage to create our own. We are controlled by our sexual desires and have no idea on how to cool that part of us off. We have surface level conversations and complain about this and that, a fully disempowered day and existence.

Did you think you needed a Teacher? A Guru?

Nope! That’s just another excuse we create so that we don’t have to make a move, so we can stay in the soft and comfortable boring zone. Listen to the way you speak to yourself, is it empowered direction or disempowered retreat talk. Listen! You are in the position you are in because of you, no one else, and it’s up to you to get yourself out. Do not focus on the external environment, that’s utterly pointless. It’s an inner battle you have been putting off, it’s ALL in YOUR MIND.

YOU Are The Guru AND The Student

You have far more power than you realized, we just don’t put it to use. Your power is in your reaction to each situation, your breathing at every moment, the expectations you hold yourself to that YOU created rather than blindly excepted based on your upbringing and culture, your understanding of language, of balancing the masculine and the feminine qualities about you, in every conscious food and water choice, in becoming ALL YOU ARE CAPABLE OF.

You have had the power all along, you just never realized it… your external environment is directing your life rather than you setting your own course.

Are you going to start charting your own course today?

Communication Breakdown

Does it ever feel like you aren’t speaking the same language as anyone else?

Well… you aren’t. So take a deep breath, your senses haven’t let you down.

One of the most important foundational pieces of any relationship/connection is communication.

Well… What IS communication?

As I’ve looked deeper into the waters of communication I was astounded at what I failed to notice all these years even though I participate in language on a daily basis. Now that I realize what communication is mainly comprised of it does not surprise me to see the difficulty we are having with one another and the social issues at large.

Please note, this is a brief over-simplified blog post about communication, I’ve left quite a bit out that I’ll cover in future posts.

Communication comes in many forms, verbal and non verbal, but for this blog post I would like to focus on the verbal and linguistic form.

The mere act of verbal communication is hardly understood. It’s nothing short of magical that I’m able to almost instantaneously retrieve experiences from my memory (content) and unconsciously put them in a syntactical sequence using symbolic metaphors (context) with little effort so that you understand what I mean. Weird huh?

Daily, I make small mouth noises which travel across space vibrationally, these vibrations enter the listener’s ear, almost instantaneously they draw from their cultural dictionary (similar to a google search) apply meaning to the word and agree that we are on the same page of understanding.

This magic happens so fast that we rarely pay attention to it. Even though we are using the same words as one another, the meanings often differ greatly along with the understandings.

One of the main enemies of clear communication is noise. I’m defining noise in this blog post as distractions, background noise, speech impediments, foreign accents AND the most common one is Semantic Noise. Noise seems to always find a way into any channel of communication, no matter how tightly “sealed” and protected.

An example of Semantic Noise would take place after an abstract statement like: “Wes likes fish.”

One listener may interpret (infuse their own meaning into the word) “Wes likes fish” as in he enjoys the taste of fish as a meal. While another listener may interpret the statement as he enjoys watching fish in an aquarium. Two interpretations that are far different from one another yet stem from the same statement.

Another example would be the following “Sarah hurt me.”

One listener may interpret this as Sarah emotionally hurt my feelings while another individual in the group may interpret the statement as she physically hurt me.

Although we use the same english words for the most part, their meanings differ greatly. Most of us understand this when we sit and reflect but often forget about it as we enter our hectic “daily grind” and confusion. The understandings differ greatly because the meanings are created on an individual basis based on that specific person’s experiences. The words themselves don’t mean anything at all, they are just their to differentiate one “thing” from another and aid in the google search of the mind. The word “Dog” has no meaning whatsoever until the meaning is infused into it on an individual neuro- semantic basis from experience. The word “Dog” may make you think of your current dog while someone else upon hearing the word “Dog” may trigger a terrible experience they encountered when a dog chased them when they were young. It’s the same word but infinite meanings are infused into it based on the individual and their own unique experiences.

Wes Pinkston

Getting tangled up in the web of Language

Anyone who has spent considerable time attempting to answer any of the great metaphysical questions of life soon begins to reach a stage of frustration. The answer seems to always extend just out of one’s reach. We either stop asking the question entirely and resume our regular days or try an alternative approach, still coming to the point of frustration although the linguisitc metaphors have been changed.

This type of semantic hide and seek can be maddening for an individual…

“Of which we cannot speak we have to remain silent.”

-Wittgenstein

For whatever reason, we can not remain silent, we keep attempting new ways to approach the answers but with the same tool every time, language.

This tool of dualistic language is precisely the sword we needed to get us to this stage of evolution BUT also prevents us from entering the room of the miraculous experience.

For us Westerner’s habitually using language we experience cognitive dissonance when we come across anything that seems ambiguous.

WE NEED CLEAR INFORMATION – the western mind

What do I do? I need advice! Be clear, What is my calling? Am I on the right path? I have to do something, but what!? Do I do this? Yes or No?

These types of thought processes create infinite paradoxes for the individual and can make people a little mad and frustrated…

The ultimate nature of reality transcends language. How is this so? The very nature of language is to discriminate one thing from the other, the act of discriminating one thing from the other is what allows us to project our meaning into one particular “thing” rather than another. But the meaning is not in the object, it’s in our mind that is projected into the object. A lamp can be seen as irrelevant to one person and a priceless family heirloom to another, although it “appears to be” the same lamp.

Meaning exists no where outside the individual, to have meaning you need an individual to discriminate an object from another, a word from another word, and create the meaning within themselves which is then projected out. We pretend to attach our words to our perceptions. We have been culturally conditioned to think with words.

Linguistics was vital in catalyzing our evolution but there will come a time where it can also hinder us on an individual and collective basis if we do not balance it with the nonverbal experience.

How do we enter into the realm of the nonverbal?

We Are All Greater Artists Than We Realize (Neuro-Relativity)

Who is the Master who makes the grass green?

– Dogen Zenji, 18th Century Zen Master

Dogen would ask all trainees this simple question… “Who is the Master who makes the grass green?”

The answer is as close as our visual cortex…

YOU!

Let me explain…

Although it may seem difficult to comprehend, we receive somewhere in the neighborhood of a billion signals every minute (this number seems to be growing higher and higher every year, just know it’s A LOT). Most of us have difficulty keeping track of more than three things at a time and there have been studies that show the average person loses their focus ten times a minute. (Hey! Pay Attention!) Let me repeat, you receive over a BILLION signals every minute, to consciously keep track of that many pieces of information would be pure chaos. In order to create order and make sense of the chaotic onslaught of billions of bits of information we use an amazing tool that reads all the other tools of our organism-as-a-whole. This tool is our nervous system, which is processing all the information being sent to us.

Every second of every day your eyes are being sent information, your ears, your skin, your nose etc. Just because the voice in your head may be focused on what you are going to say to the beautiful guy/girl in class, does not mean the rest of your organism isn’t taking care of (processing) everything else, to be honest I wouldn’t want to be in charge of my breathing, bathroom breaks, food digestion, blood circulation, I’d probably forget all too often and then die, so it’s best it’s left to a more reliable companion, this companion, is your nervous system.

You are not made up of a whole bunch of pieces like Frankenstein, going forward, or at least for this blog post, you need to view yourself as one organism, the organism-as-a-whole, not the sum of a bunch of parts, it’s ALL ONE THING. Every evaluation that is being made is an evaluation as a whole, what the voice in your brain thinks it’s controlling is merely a false dichotomy,

For an exercise, tell yourself you know the difference between a movie and real life. The movie is composed of actors, actresses, directors, producers, lights, camera, you get it…. Now go see a scary movie in your local theatre that are so popular. Tell yourself it’s just a movie and “not real” and see if you don’t grab the chair, flinch, get shortness of breath, look away… What your voice in your head thinks it controls is an illusion, your body will still get tense in the theatre even though you tell yourself in your head “It’s just a movie…. it’s just a movie…..”

EVERY EVALUATION YOU MAKE IS AN EVALUATION OF YOUR ENTIRE NERVOUS SYSTEM.

Our nervous system’s role is to receive, transmit and integrate signals and messages. While your conscious attention is focused on the act of reading these words, your nervous system is taking care of your blood flow, breathing, food digestion, filtering out harmful bacteria etc. The nervous system to this day appears to be a collection of many interlocking systems such as the immunological system, the endocrine system, the neuro-muscular system and so forth. All of these systems are in the process of computation, it’s a synergetic process on many levels and the messages are being sent up to the brain.

Your brain, the amazing bio-computer composed of One-Hundred Billion Neurons, receives the information from your nervous system and constructs a model of the world, which is then projected out. This model of the world, grid, reality tunnel, map, whatever term you’d like to use, is not objective reality, it’s your own personalized model/map that is being projected outwards. Read that last part again. The processing speed of your nervous system is so fast that we don’t notice it, and often never come to the realization that everything we come in contact with is not reality but our interpretation of reality.

The Map is NOT the Territory, meaning the model of the world your brain is creating from the signals it’s receiving from your nervous system, is not objective reality, but completely subjective. Or as Alan Wattsbeautifully stated “The Menu is NOT the Meal.” Everyone is using a different map to orient themselves around the environment, it’s no surprise why we have such difficulty communicating with one another and most of us feel misunderstood.

We are all greater artists than we realize

YOU are the master that makes the grass green, the green is not outside you, it’s in you, your visual cortex registers green from the environment, it does not exist outside “in the grass.”

Now that you know you are creating a model of the world and not viewing it from a completely objective lens, Click Here to read the next post using metaphors to illustrate how your mind works and how these maps we all create are acted out on a daily basis.

Wes Pinkston

The Thinker & The Prover

“All that we are is the result of all that we have thought. It is founded on thought. It is based on thought.”

-Buddha, The Dhammapada

William James,  the father of American Psychology, once told a story about an encounter with an older lady who believed the Earth rested on the back of a massive Turtle. Entering her model of reality, he kindly asked her, “Well what is holding up that turtle?” She responded quickly, “The Turtle is standing on the back of another turtle.” Before he could ask again she let him know, “It’s no use Dr. James, it’s Turtles allll the way down,”

Now before you label this lady as “delusional,” I think you’ll realize that ALL humans perceive their reality in the same fundamental manner, whether it’s Turtles or some other model of the world.

Dr. Leonard Orr once noted, the human mind behaves as if it were divided into two parts, the Thinker and the Prover.

The Thinker, the more complex of the two parts, can essentially think up anything. For example, depending on the time period, the Thinker can think that the universe is nothing to get excited about (Buddhism) or that the world is flat (Many Athletes seem to has this view these days.) The Thinker can think the cosmos is meaningless (Scientific Reductionists) or depending on the school of philosophy/religion that man is moral/immoral, mortal/immortal, or some combination of the two. The Thinker can also Think himself/herself sick and back to health, which the medical industry is still trying to figure out to this day.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone, it just simply shows that our instrument/tool for perceiving the world “outside,” our nervous system, has the ability to construct many types of maps depending on the time, culture, language and leadership for that specific environment.

I won’t go into detail in this blog post about what the Thinker is comprised of, but to provide some structure it appears to this day to be a combination of genetics, early imprinting, subsequent conditioning, and any new types of learning throughout the individual’s life (These are the main categories).

Now comes the fun part, the Prover. Now that you have your model for the world, the “map of the territory” as Alfred Korzybski artistically put it, you set out to Prove your model, to see if it works and makes you feel happy/secure. Whether you Prove this through the DeletionDistortion or Generalization of information (It’s always a combination of the three) you will attempt to Prove it is so.

For example, lets take the fun model of the world that some celebrities are adamant about, the Flat Earth Theory. Once this individual incorporates this belief into their map of the world, they will distort, delete and generalize information to Prove the world is flat. They do this without being conscious of it. On the other side of the model, his/her friends will distort, delete and generalize information to Prove their model, that the Earth is round and “floating” in space. What the Thinker thinks, the Prover Proves. This example seems to me to be the least abrasive, but as some of you connected the dots, any economic, political, religious or philosophical belief can be inserted above

Many individuals are quick to point out how silly of a belief system others have, but do not realize that they, themselves, have constructed a model on the same basic principles.

Until you become WOKE AF, find enlightenment, satori, whatever your phrase is, which simply means you have been able to become aware of the distinction between your subjective map of the world and the objective territory itself, we will be in a continuous loop of dissatisfaction trying to fit the world into our model that we ourselves have created. If you haven’t noticed yet, this can not be done.

Most of the humans throughout the course of history Thought they had THE CORRECT MAP of the world and set out to Prove it, by whatever means they felt necessary, which sadly, is still going on today and is the source of most of the turmoil.

We can not operate without a model, but don’t forget, you have created the internal model yourself. So take some time to reflect on what your Thinking, and what you set out to Prove each day, or don’t, what do I know, this is just what I Think.

Love,

Wes Pinkston

The Power of Questions

As I was driving back to Encinitas (North County San Diego) from Beverly Hills this past weekend, I saw a familiar sign on the freeway, The "55." I quickly processed the information and decided to let my intuition take me down the 55 freeway to my former college Chapman University. Campus was only a few miles from my route so I figured I'd stop by, mainly to visit the football team that I was an integral part of from 2005 through 2008.

My former Head Coach, Bob Owens (Chapman University, Orange, CA.)

My former Head Coach, Bob Owens (Chapman University, Orange, CA.)

My strong intuition didn't mislead me, I stopped by the coaching offices and connected on a much deeper level with all my former coaches than all the years prior, combined. It was these moments that I've come to cherish more than anything, but why have these deeply connected moments and conversations been happening at an increasing rate...

You can only connect with others as deeply as you have connected with yourself.

Speaking to my Alma Mater, The Chapman University Football Team

Speaking to my Alma Mater, The Chapman University Football Team

These deep connections have always been there, in every moment, I just didn't have the vision to realize it and bring it out. As I was meditating that night, after speaking to 100 current players, coaches and staff, I came to the realization my perception and role in each conversation had shifted from the one giving the answers and waiting from my turn to speak, to the one deeply interested in them and their life's experiences. I am far more fascinated with interviewing others than talking to others about myself.

What are they seeing, feeling, sensing. What does their daily routine consist of, how do they prioritize their events for the day, what books and mentors completely shifted their perception of life, how exactly did this shift occur? How do you handle transitions, whether it's job or relationships...

If we can forget about our own selfish stance in the discussion, and become enamored by their life experiences, we can coax out golden knowledge nuggets that even they weren't aware of. The power of strategic and timely questions can create profound and unforgettable connections that we all deeply yearn for.

Whether it is an upper class-man who is playing your position in football, or a high level CEO that you'd like to emulate, extracting their process and actions that get the results are just a few conscious questions away. Put the other individual in the spotlight and break down their key pivotal moments and approaches to life, by learning from their experiences we can save ourselves a lot of time, energy and unwarranted stress.

Love,

Coming to our Senses

For our basic survival we are provided little, merely our wits and senses. Our wits and senses are shaped entirely by our centric view of self and the need for survival along with the environment which we exist in, mainly the language that shaped the environment. The tool that shifted our sense perceptions was the introduction of the phonetic alphabet (Your ABC's), in roughly 500 B.C. The environment for our survival today, rather than the grass lands of our ancestors is of a digital nature and landscape which is far much complex due to the mere speed at which patterns of information reach our senses.

The emergence of the digital landscape has shifted our sense perceptions drastically, in a general sense it is going from a visual landscape to an acoustic one. This requires new sensory adjustments that many are incapable of making, resulting in confusion and a conquest for the illusion of identity which the phonetic alphabet manifested. While our immediate experience in this new environment is acoustic, meaning whole, disconnected and spontaneous, we are using a visual bias, which creates a great deal of cognitive dissonance.

Physiologically, it is the play of both the left and right hemisphere of the brain. On the left we have the logical, rational, connected, linear, private and individualistic faculty. On the right we encounter the faculty of intuition, community, disconnected and simultaneous (The Artist). Many children encounter this today, using a highly participatory medium such as the television and then attending school which is completely left hemisphere, evaluative, analytical, non participatory, homogeneous. This dynamic of visual to acoustic without understanding, creates innumerable psychological blockages and tension.

In order to traverse the landscape we need to get back to our bodies as the primary director of our survival. Not simply having knowledge of our sense perceptions and how certain mediums play with figure and ground, but a true understanding that can be implemented.

Take a hear and look around, what patterns do you recognize? If we can see the patterns and congruency that life manifests from, we will be in a better and more relaxed position from moment to moment, because the "future" is much more predicable than we ever believed. When this composed state of mind is achieved, we function in a much more smooth manner rather than emotionally reactive to a seemingly infinite wave of unforeseen trouble.

Love,

Wes Pinkston

The Dance between Patience and Mindful Business

In today's business culture, common words that are thrown around are "Grinding," "Hustle," "Workaholic," "Do, Do, Do," "More! More! More!." The business culture I was deeply embedded in and the values it upheld and what I directly came in contact with based on my own immediate feelings, always seemed out of harmony. We are quickly handed the industry rhetoric as to how things are, the proverbial "blueprint for success." Follow this concept, this model, and you will achieve the reward. We quickly hit the ground running because we have the consistent set of waves coming in known as bills, debt, and so on. There is no time for patience, for reflection, I need to go DO something or the industry will leave me in the dust, I will lose to the competition, I won't be able to pay my bills or maintain MY lifestyle.

Take a deep breath... the momentum and tension builds and builds until it works against us completely.

In the same way we are handed a concept of "how it is" in business, the same goes for life. What I failed to realize, and many others, is the mere fact that it is simply THEIR concept as to how life or the industry is, just one concept of seemingly infinite. Once we believe what we are told as to "how it is" then we use such a small portion of our unique faculty and creativity because there is a small space of wiggle room within the confining walls of "their concept and models for what THEY believe success is" and how to achieve it. Learn what you'd like from mentors, teachers etc and then forget it all, throw it away, the information and technologies available now didn't exists back then when they developed their models and concepts, and most importantly it was contoured to fit their unique faculty, not yours.

Manifest your own concepts and models that work within the harmony of YOU and the unique faculty you have at your disposal.

Before you begin in an industry, it is highly beneficial to first look at it from a birds eye view as a "Game." By game I mean it adheres to rules, roles, and boundaries. Regardless of industry, everything operates within a system of order, some more complicated than others. The one that truly understands this, does not view business as competitive, rather they view it as collaborative. The Male Dominator Complex influenced by greed and fear that many in the business world are working off of is not worth any amount of material gain compared to what it costs you in the end.

The Rules and Boundaries of the game you are entering into are rather simple concepts, your Role in the game is what I'd like to dive deeper into...

Until you clearly figure out what your role is, your strengths and what you enjoy, how this "work" fits within your ideal day, which hopefully you have drawn out, you'll just inherit someone else's concept or model for success, that was completely molded to fit their strengths and their lifestyle. You'll quickly find yourself in situations, like I did, where you are "forcing" or "grinding" yourself to work in ways that are out of touch of your natural rhythm rather than shaping your work day around your strengths and special faculty we all have.

Speaking from my own experience, I never reflected and figured out what I was truly good at, what I enjoyed, in other words I didn't feel I really had a purpose, I just floated from job to job as a means to cover my monthly expenses and what would make me the most money. True financial freedom is not achieved by thinking about achieving financial freedom. There is a reason you are here, a purpose, you are not an accident, you are present because you need to be. You have a skill set that nobody has ever had in the history of man, what are your skills? Does the job you currently have use these skills? What does your dream day look like? How does your job or business fit within that perfect day?

Rather than speaking about being uphappy, disliking aspects of ourselves or phenomena like our job/relationships etc., write down what your perfect day looks like and what you do like. This is the first step in making it a reality, begin to visualize it and speak about it intelligently.

If one takes a step back and clearly views the process of nature, which we are an integral part of, it is quite clear that our immediate experience is becoming more and more complex, otherwise known as novelty. Nature produces higher systems of order and complexification to produce even higher states of order and complexification. Since this is the case, where our time and energy is spent is critical to a healthy experience. With complexity taking place faster and faster, we need to be highly fluid, adaptable and organized. We can't get stuck within models and concepts that were formulated based on conditions that were far different from the present. As we can take a step out of the infinite games we partake in daily, our business, our relationships, all phenomena, and reflect, we can navigate through the ever changing complexifying landscape with greater ease. One of the most productive activities is non activity, let the dust settle where we have been stopping around in all week to see our path more clearly and gracefully.

Ego Yoga

For many reading this, including myself, the most practiced yoga in the West is Ego Yoga. If I may take a partisan stance on all yogas, from my experience it is by far the most difficult. Before I begin let's define yoga, it simply means "Union." The list of Yoga's are infinite so there is no need to list them. Yoga is much more vast than handstands and body contortion, although that is the most highly publicized.

You and I, we chose Ego yoga, no one hypnotized, tricked or forced us to go down this path, we did it, it was our own karma. Karma is highly misused, it simply means "action."

What is the Ego?

Ego is simply Your Character Structure, who you THINK you are. Your likes, your dislikes, your story, your past, your friends, your family, your job, your strengths, your weaknesses, your misfortunes, and the list is infinite. Almost everyone here in the West only views this world that they feel they came into, without their approval, as this detached limited character with little to no support.

I, a stranger and afraid
In a world I never made.

This character, (Insert Your Name Here), is merely a thought. Think about that statement this week, the image of yourself, as to who you think you are is merely a thought, albeit a constant thought you decide to keep in your head nearly every moment. Imagine this character, your name and life story, as a suit in your closet. Each night when we fall into the dream state while sleeping we forget all about this character we have made ourselves to be, and when we rise we walk to our closet and put on this suit of my likes, my fears, my righteousness, my problems every single morning. We have cut ourselves off from the world we were born out of, that we belong to, we did not come into it. That is why we have some of the most difficult feelings and emotions available as we progress along this path of Ego Yoga, we have completely removed ourselves and have lost touch with our support, our home, where we belong, we are fighting and competing against ourselves every single day and the fight gets very tiring, our arms, our entire body and our mind become weary and almost depleted.

During Ego Yoga we progressively cut ourselves off from the seemingly "outside world" and we begin to feel alienated. We can not escape this alienated present moment, the eternal present where we never feel we belong, I can't catch a break, everyone is against me, I work too hard to be in this position, the infinite self-righteous internal chatter. This disconnected "now" that you find yourself in, is the true birth place for responsibility. Oddly enough this shows you are making progress, although I had moments along my path where all enthusiasm for life had almost run completely dry.

I've felt and experienced the humbling path of ego yoga, I see my own immediate family along their paths of ego yoga, I see my friends and many of my clients, this is the most highly practiced path here in the West and it all leads to the same place, union with everything, that you are deeply part of, whether you want to be or not ;) Be patient and conscious, observe, let life live through you rather than always trying to go out and live life, as you become more sensitive you will realize you are fully supported and you are growing each and every moment. Life, your immediate experience, is energy. Energy is vibration, in another term, contrast. Everything is wiggling, sometimes the wiggle doesn't feel as you'd like it to, but that feeling comes from the egoic self-righteous stance of how you feel life should cater and suit your character's needs. Life can't be controlled, but our Ego Yoga path will teach us that directly. You are in class, and we should find grace in the curriculum.
